Vince Gilligan Shares He Has a Plan for How The Apple TV+ Show Will End... Currently.
The creative mastermind did not foresee that his new science-fiction series would emerge as a cultural phenomenon. “The viewers have been incredible,” he states. “I did not foresee the show being as widely discussed as it is, and it makes me deliriously happy.”
As the debut season of the hit series wrapping up—and Season 2 already in development—Gilligan and his team recently discussed the fan response and whether it will impact the narrative path of Pluribus.
Regarding the Overwhelming Audience Reaction
One could easily to get distracted by the rampant praise and fan theories surrounding Pluribus. Gilligan, however, is making a conscious effort to steer clear of all that.
“The experience is akin to an endless supply of your favorite dessert and being tickled to death,” he explains. “It's amazing, but I get wind of it anecdotally, and that's on purpose. I have never looked myself up on the internet, nor do I ever intend to. It's not a lack of interest. It's a deep trap I know I would fall into and then I'd be never leaving the house from the hardware store and I'd rarely emerge from my living room.”
Despite his concerted efforts, there’s it's impossible to ignore the extremely enthusiastic response to the series. The most practical strategy is to take it in stride and try not to let it dictate the story of the show.
“It is not our goal to change the plot,” says Alison Tatlock. “Our storytelling is not impacted by audience chatter.”
“Better to keep our heads down and working,” he chimes in.
A Pressing Query: Will the creator See the Finale of Pluribus?
So if the writers aren’t being guided by fan response, can we assume they already know how Pluribus will reach its endpoint? Essentially yes… in a way.
“There are some compelling concepts about the ultimate destination,” Gilligan reveals. “but we are always ready to discard a good idea for a better idea. That philosophy has guided us in well on Better Call Saul and on Breaking Bad even before that. We change course when we conceive of something superior and I imagine we will be doing that.”
Alternatively, if they hit a wall, Gordon Smith has a rather amusing idea to use as a backup.
“I keep pitching that everything takes place within a snow globe, and that we'll reveal the snow globe and that's where they've been all along,” Smith jokes, “but nobody's taking me up on that.”
Then again, one could always use the iconic TV endings?
“I'd love for Carol to open her eyes beside Bob Newhart,” he jokes.
Pluribus is currently available on the streaming service.
