Together Can Be Streamed, and It Could Strengthen or Shatter Your Relationship.

Here's a test for long-term couples who appreciate scary movies: Get comfortable with your loved one and view Together. This 2025 indie hit just made its online premiere via Hulu. On the surface, it may seem like typical physical horror, but inside Together resides a deep meditation about the ways we decide to love one another.

A Debut Feature Exploring Relationship Dynamics

Together represents the first full-length movie for director Michael Shanks. It showcases the real-life married couple Dave Franco and Alison Brie as Tim and Millie, a pair who are not married that have remained a couple for ten years. Having wed in actuality in 2017, the two stars contribute a unique chemistry to their portrayals, expertly portraying both the good and bad of a committed partnership.

The plot starts when Millie and Tim transition from the big city to the rural area for her career. A commonly used narrative setup, of course, but that’s primarily where the conventions cease. Together transforms into as much a examination of mental states of the partnership as it is a body horror flick.

A Supernatural Catalyst

While walking near their country house, a violent storm occurs, and the protagonists fall into an hole in the earth. After a night spent there and managing to escape, a supernatural entity takes hold of the pair. This force creates a otherworldly bond between them that goes far beyond emotional intimacy.

The entire film is a methodically building of scares, weaving in bits of dreamlike terrors, disturbing (but tastefully done) physical transformations, and genuinely funny exchanges (sometimes in the middle of something disturbing). The director skillfully blends these components seamlessly and wraps them up in a gradually swelling atmosphere of fear.

Complex Characterizations

A great deal of Together is only the performances of its stars, and they masterfully render manifold depths to the characters’ relationship. Millie's sense of self and sense of connection is deteriorating due to a lack of intimacy. Her subconscious resentment of Tim for his unwillingness to chase only his floundering music career inexorably rises.

In contrast, Tim's character senses confinement and separated by Millie, who’s the reason they’ve relocated rural and far away from his support system. He fears the concept of utterly sacrificing his personal autonomy in his partner. This fear is further exacerbated by the reality he can’t drive and needs Millie for transportation.

The film's most intelligent aspect in Together refrains from painting either of his characters the clear bad guy.

The couple confront the type of challenges that arise in long-term unions after ten years. At their core, they have affection for one another. They find humor with each other, offer support, and share intimately at times. But under the surface, there’s an inescapable undercurrent of doubt about their future together.

Symbolism and Metaphor

While the supernatural forces in Together symbolize these concerns of unhealthy attachment and fully committing to a partner, the metaphor never feels overly obvious or self-important. Instead, these ickier, creepier moments provide a brilliant analogue to the interpersonal storytelling. Both the horror and the drama work together symbiotically.

A Controversial Conclusion

Together’s ending, which is best experienced firsthand, has sparked debate on the story's concluding statement about unhealthy partnerships. Reports indicate that single viewers have interpreted the film as a strong argument for avoiding commitment. On the other hand, a few pairs who were in conflict found that the film ultimately assisted them make up.

If you are alone or with a partner, your own interpretation could function as a telling indicator of how you perceive partnership. Will the finale sow feelings of uneasiness and dread, or a uplifting feeling of optimism? Will you identify in one of the characters and yell at the screen, or simply glance toward your other half and utter, “I’d do that for you”?

Regardless of the outcome, Together is an test you can undertake at this very moment.

Together is available to watch on Hulu now.
