The Mayor-Elect confirms plans to make his home in the iconic Gracie Mansion
New York City's next chief executive, Zohran Mamdani, has decided to live in the iconic Gracie Mansion, vacating the rent-stabilised apartment that sparked debate in his run for office.
A Historic Residence
Built in 1799, Gracie Mansion has functioned as the official residence for the majority of New York City mayors from the post-war period.
But, Mamdani, for whom rent control is a key policy, did not confirm he would live there immediately after his electoral win in November.
"The choice came down to our family's safety and the importance of focusing my full attention on enacting the affordability agenda the city's residents voted for," the Mayor-Elect declared in his announcement.
A Fond Farewell
Mamdani lived in the Astoria neighbourhood, a community renowned for its abundance of cultural enclaves and international dining.
"To the people of Astoria: thank you for exemplifying the best of New York City," Mamdani's statement said.
"While I may no longer live in the neighborhood, the community will forever remain inside me and the work I do," he said.
Political Debate
Throughout his campaign, Mamdani connected his key pledge – a rent freeze – to his circumstances as a tenant.
However his rivals, most notably ex-governor Andrew Cuomo, challenged Mamdani for living in the apartment although he hails from a well-known family.
Not All Mayors Stayed
Some mayors have chosen to live at Gracie Mansion.
Michael Bloomberg, the business magnate, preferred to remain in his own townhouse on the Upper East Side for his three terms, which concluded in 2012.
Rather, Bloomberg argued it ought to be a venue for official events, and advocated for an extensive renovation of the aging mansion.
A Grand New Home
Upon taking up residence at Gracie Mansion for his first day on 1 January, he will be surrounded by a setting far removed from his humble Astoria digs.
With its cream-colored walls, forest green window covers, and bright white balustrades, Gracie Mansion is an ornate structure situated by the East River.
Within, the ground floor of the classically designed mansion is appointed consistent with the home's original era.
The compound, which reportedly has five bedrooms, also boasts enhanced security to safeguard the mayor and his family.
Ghostly Tales
A number of people have alleged that Gracie Mansion also has spiritual residents.
Chirlane McCray, the spouse of previous mayor Bill De Blasio, told reporters that they experienced doors opening and shutting on their own, and the floorboards made strange noises.
Outgoing Mayor Eric Adams was more certain. "I don't care the skeptics say," he stated in 2022. "It has spirits in there, man."
The Value of Rent Stabilization
His former home is rent stabilised, meaning the city imposes caps on how much property owners can hike the monthly cost each year.
City residents see such units as essential protections as the housing expenses rises faster than the means of many residents.
It was reported Mamdani paid about $2,300 each month for his apartment.
Based on data from the property website Zillow, the median rent for a single-bedroom unit in New York City is $3,500 a month.
