Tetris Didn't Triumph at The Game Awards — Another Award Type Might Solve This

Each time a prominent prize-giving event draws close, there’s always an outcry to include fresh award types to acknowledge overlooked contributions and fill the hearts of followers who have specialized interests.

A fellow writer previously argued supporting a scary games classification. That would rule. The same goes for board games, representing a dedicated supporter's campaign. But they will have to forgive me for pushing forward because like all blinkered fanatics, I have a cast-iron argument supporting my request is the most urgent and important of all. This is the request: There should be a category for puzzle games.

Categorizing Game Types

Classifying creative works defies precise measurement; it’s very subjective, and typically generate discussions concluding with vague boundaries. There’s a reason cinema institutions don’t do it. Yet it remains a necessary evil within the realm of interactive entertainment, which are so diverse it's challenging to consider them as a single art form.

To recognize the complete range of interactive entertainment excellence to be recognized, and to ensure all game types to receive proper recognition, genre categories are essential.

Current Gaming Award Categories

Prominent interactive entertainment events offer these classifications covering Action-oriented games, Adventure-action titles, Role-Playing, Fighting, Sim/Strategy, and Sports/Racing games. Collectively, these six categories actually cover many game types, allowing placement accommodating various experiences.

Different situation exists for puzzle games. No suitable classification appears to put them. Consider three of recent excellent titles, showing diverse approaches: the architectural riddles in a particular game, fast-paced pattern recognition from another release, and the sweetly sociological logic puzzles in another game. What category would fit them among existing types? Simply put, no category fits.

Acknowledgment Issues

Many instances occur of brilliant puzzle games released every year lacking appropriate categories in entertainment awards, unless they happen to qualify award groups including Handheld titles, Virtual reality experiences, or the intensely contested Indie races.

  • One classic puzzle game received no recognition in any category that year
  • A different innovative game was excluded that year
  • Well-received sorting experience was overlooked that year
  • Limited numbers of puzzle games barely qualified for small studio or handheld classifications

Importance of Logic Titles

Frequently they represent small games, but the art behind logic titles is of massive significance. Iconic mobile puzzle games rank among most engaged experiences in the world continuing this trend for many years.

The iconic tile-matching title rivals popular creative games claiming status as most purchased experience; it additionally competes for best game of all time. Puzzle games are foundational to the art of video games, and they are in conversation across multiple categories.

Proposal and Rationale

Logic titles wouldn't face such difficulty. You could fill multiple candidates interesting, varied, worthy titles annually without trouble — or rather, with difficulty, since numerous excellent many worthy titles.

Restating the point, these represent titles that otherwise have no home in important events. Brain-teaser creators operate at the hard edge of video game design, developing some of essential manifestations within interactive entertainment. Similar to movie stunt professionals, they warrant appreciation. Don't make them wait generations.
