Senegal's Rising Star Camara: Starting from Aspirations to Afcon Favourites.

When I enter the space, the young midfielder picks up a soccer ball he won’t let go of throughout our chat. It’s a powerful visual metaphor for a ambition he has never let slip. “My sole focus was the beautiful game; I was focused solely on that,” remarks the AS Monaco and Senegal playmaker.

His determination and raw talent convinced teams such as Génération Foot, Metz and Monaco. However, the most difficult person to convince didn't come from a club executive or manager, but his own father. “He didn’t want me playing soccer simply because he hadn’t seen me play,” says Camara.

Overcoming Early Hurdles

In time, on “one beautiful day,” he received his dad's approval to chase his career in the game. A further barrier was his small stature, which deterred local club Casa Sports from offering him a deal.

However, the famed academy – the club that nurtured stars like Sadio Mané, Papiss Cissé and Ismaïla Sarr – saw his potential instantly. Following Camara was named the MVP in a local competition, the scouts were “shocked” to learn he was not tied down. They acted quickly. “They took me directly to the training centre. They prevented me from going back home,” Camara said.

A Landmark Year and Continental Breakthrough

That decision put him on a trajectory to Europe. A defining period came in 2023, “an unforgettable year,” which began with Camara winning the CHAN trophy. Just weeks later, despite fatigue, he played in the Under-20s Afcon, leading his country to the title and being named player of the tournament.

A month later, he was unveiled as Metz, emulating Mané. “Settling in wasn't a challenge,” states the youngster. He has lived by himself in Europe, a situation his relatives encourage to keep him focused.

Inspiration and Playing Style

Distractions are not really a problem for Camara, who looks up to Kevin De Bruyne’s “modesty” and exceptional skills. He is also a big admirer of midfielders such as Fede Valverde, Toni Kroos, and his international teammate Idrissa Gana Gueye.

His powerful shot and accuracy from dead-ball situations are notable assets. He admits a need to temper his aggression, having been shown red early in his tenures at each French club. “It is a habit that is following me!” he quips.

Life at Monaco, Mentors and Future Ambitions

With his current club, he cherishes the guidance of veterans such as Denis Zakaria and particularly Paul Pogba. “As soon as I heard Monaco were interested in Pogba, I told myself we are fortunate,” he said.

Currently, his focus is squarely on the Afcon tournament with Senegal. “We are the favourites – we can’t hide from that. After defeating England in their own country…,” he says, referencing a historic 3-1 victory in Nottingham.

Regarding a future move to the Premier League, he is focused on Monaco at present. “I am very comfortable here,” he affirms. However, he's often ribbed by Senegalese legend El-Hadji Diouf about his two Africa Young Player of the Year awards. Camara jokes, yet remains determined about targeting the main top prize in the future.

“We are the favourites – that's the reality. If you beat England in their own country… it instills belief.”

Moving forward, Lamine Camara blends a modest start, steely determination, and grand ambitions as he aims to guide Senegal to continental glory and build his own legendary path in the game.
