No fewer than thirteen individuals lose their lives and 98 injured in rail accident in the nation of Mexico.

A deadly train crash in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has resulted in the deaths of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive opposition criticisms regarding the speed and management of the country's key public works projects.

The accident took place on the Interoceanic Train, a route constructed to connect the Atlantic and Pacific Ocean across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This initiative was intended to provide an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving economic development in the area.

“We are going to rigorously clarify what caused this accident,” declared the national leader.

The official announced that, of the some 250 individuals on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in grave condition. The president noted plans to visit Oaxaca to confer with those involved.

Flagship Project of Past Leadership

The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone development scheme of the former leader, whose presidency concluded the previous year. This venture was closely associated with his government's economic agenda for the southeastern region.

Another massive railway undertaking from that time, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also part of the wider plan to revitalize the economy of a historically disadvantaged part of the country.

Building Management and Worries

The development of both rail lines was supervised by the armed forces, marking a significant expansion of its duties in public infrastructure. They were built at an fast-tracked rate, beating expectations to be partially launched before the end of that presidency.

However, this rushed timetable had concurrently raised ongoing questions over safety standards.

  • Sunday's crash was the third occurrence on the Interoceanic Train this year.
  • This involves an prior accident this month when a train struck a truck at a crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also experienced several non-fatal derailments.

Demands for Investigation and Halt

In the aftermath of the catastrophe, the leader of a major opposition party urged an prompt pause in the development and management of all such projects.

This stoppage was suggested pending a thorough technical review. The party declared that the situation "requires prompt explanations."

In reaction, the head of state maintained that the train had been running in complete accordance with all safety requirements. Promises were given that the government would remain "responsible" in both the development and running of these national initiatives.
