New York Jets Head Coach Glenn Confident Kris Boyd Will Recover Fully After NYC Incident
Jets head coach Aaron Glenn has stated that he recently spoke with cornerback Kris Boyd and believes the athlete will be OK after being shot in midtown Manhattan early Sunday morning.
Glenn noted that Boyd, who is hospitalized, was “upbeat” during their latest talk.
“What reassures me, is that his mood is upbeat,” Glenn commented. “His wife and his kid, they are doing well and he will walk away from this just fine.”
The coach did not know when Boyd could be discharged the hospital, where his condition is described as serious yet stable.
“Don’t know just yet,” the coach said. “However, I can share, hearing him speak, he seemed very positive. And again, that puts my mind at ease, that he feels like that and his words reflect that optimism.”
New York police shared surveillance images earlier this week of a suspect in the attack on the player. The reason behind the incident remains under investigation and authorities said it remains uncertain if Boyd was singled out. There were no additional victims as confirmed by officials.
The attack took place around 2 a.m. on Sunday near the famous arena and Times Square. Boyd, 29, was taken to a local hospital after being shot in the abdomen, as reported. The shooter fled the scene.
Glenn shared Boyd has been in his thoughts “constantly” since he heard about the shooting. The coach said that Boyd and his spouse recently welcomed a baby.
“The first thing I thought about, he has a new baby,” Glenn noted. “My mind went to his family, worrying about his newborn and I want to make sure that he’s OK. And that’s the only thing that really went through my mind.
“There is a procedure involved, which I won’t get into, but I am pleased that he’s going to come out of this thing really, really well.”
Boyd hasn’t played in the present campaign, his first with the Jets, after going on the season-ending injured reserve list on August 18 with an injury to his shoulder that needed an operation.
He signed with New York as a new signing in spring and was projected as a key part of an improved special teams group under Glenn and ST coordinator the special teams coach. Unfortunately, he sustained an injury during a practice session on August 2 and was carted from the field.
Boyd has remained around the team during the entire campaign while recovering from the shoulder injury.
“He remains involved with our activities,” Glenn commented. “I mean, he is a regular at our matches. He is completely involved. To be one of the top special teams players in this league, he has been instrumental in guiding others.”
Boyd, hailing from the Lone Star State, spent his initial four years with Minnesota after getting drafted in the seventh round by Minnesota out of the University of Texas in 2019. He joined the Arizona Cardinals in last year and moved to Houston’s squad later that season. Boyd signed a one-year contract worth $1.6m with the Jets in March.
