Citizens have come together around the country to commemorate two years since the Hamas-initiated assault on that fateful day in October 2023, as negotiations advanced in the neighboring country over a resolution to the hostilities in the Gaza Strip.

The incident resulted in over 1,200 people killed and 251 others taken back to Gaza as captives. It was the uniquely most fatal day for Jews since the Holocaust.

Israel reacted by initiating a defensive operation in Gaza which has killed more than 67,000 people, as reported by the region's Hamas-administered health ministry. Its numbers are considered reliable by the United Nations and other world agencies.

"Our aggressive enemies have caused great damage, but they have not defeated us," the prime minister stated on that day.

He also pledged to "accomplish all the goals of the war: the release of all the kidnapped, the elimination of the Hamas government and the guarantee that Gaza will no longer pose a danger to Israel".

Remembrance Events Across Israel

The national leadership rescheduled official remembrance events until 16 October - after the completion of the religious holiday season - but events still occurred throughout the country on that day.

A commemorative event for the loved ones of Israelis who died in the Hamas attack was organized in Tel Aviv. Put together by the families themselves, it was broadcast throughout Israeli television channels.

Hours earlier, a minute's silence was respected throughout the country.

Negotiation Meetings in Egypt

Meanwhile, both sides' delegations gathered in the Egyptian Red Sea resort of the Egyptian city for a follow-up session of mediated discussions to review the provisions of the proposal.

A high-ranking delegate familiar with the talks revealed that an late session of indirect talks started at evening in Egypt.

The representative said the day's discussions ended without tangible results, amid disagreements over the recommended Israeli retreat arrangements from Gaza and over guarantees Hamas seeks to make certain Israel does not recommence combat after the opening period of the arrangement.

He noted that the negotiations are "difficult and have not yet produce any significant progress," but pointed out that mediators are making efforts to narrow the disparities between the conflicting groups.

Key Matters in Discussions

  • A permanent halt to fighting
  • The exchange of the hostages still detained by Hamas for inmates from Gaza
  • The pullout of Israeli forces from Gaza
  • Arrangements for humanitarian aid deliveries
  • After-conflict management of the area

Public Reaction

In Tel Aviv's memorial area earlier, young Hagar - whose brother lived through the incident on the Nova music festival, where 378 people were killed and many more were abducted by Hamas gunmen - explained: "No place appears as home any longer and until all the hostages return none of us will feel safe."

"Once we see all home again, we can relax anew. Then we can begin to recover," she concluded.

Outside the leader's official dwelling in the capital, people assembled to show their solidarity for the families of the abducted. Israel states 48 continue in captivity in Gaza, approximately twenty of whom are thought to be living.

Activist one woman remarked: "We must do whatever arrangement required for the captives to return. But we really want assurances that we will be safe."

Surveys now consistently show that about 70% of the population desire the hostilities to conclude in exchange for the release of the abducted.

Gaza Conditions

At the area of Nova festival, grieving people came together to honor the dead.

From the site, the noise of military attacks and explosions could be noticed just a few kilometres away in Gaza, where local people said the severe Israeli shelling continued.

In the main city, air and artillery strikes were documented in the early hours of Tuesday in the western district, area and Nasr neighbourhoods and in the eastern district of Sheikh Radwan, as well the camp to the north-west.

"Once the night falls, the anxiety arrives with it," displaced urban resident a mother, whose teenage son was killed by an Israeli aerial attack last year, explained.

"My family are fearful of the attacks. All the night we are sleeping together, holding each other, particularly my little child who rests his face on me the entire evening."

"Continuously we monitor the news to see what happened. And I'm worried that this truce will not be finalized and that the fighting will return to us."

Health Emergency

The healthcare center in Gaza City said it had received the bodies of half dozen people by the afternoon, including three killed in an Israeli bombing in the south part district.

Nasser hospital in the south region of that area reported two more fatalities had been brought there. A person was died by Israeli forces while looking for aid to the south, medics reported.

The region's health ministry announced a significant number of the {territ
