Right-leaning reactions to the limited release of files involving the Jeffrey Epstein case have been mixed, with some backers of the former Trump administration highlighting the prominent presence of Bill Clinton and additional Democratic figures in images, while others lamented how extensive censorship cast Donald Trump and Republicans in a negative manner.
Administration Justifies Redactions with Fervent Hyperbole
Administration officials justified the redactions with intense hyperbole. “Never in U.S. the nation's history has a Commander-in-Chief or the Department of Justice been so open with the American people about such a delicate law enforcement issue,” declared Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanche, who released a six-page memo outlining the censorship process.
Concerns Raised by Redactions
While Trump's identity and image are visible in some of the documents, the extensive redactions raise serious questions about what may be concealed behind them. A number of Republicans swiftly demanded greater transparency.
“The public are furious and disengaging,” wrote Republican Congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene.
Via a online statement, Republican Congressman Thomas Massie said the redactions violate the law, and implied that a future legislature may move to remove the Attorney General, Pam Bondi, for that violation. “Regrettably, today’s file dump egregiously does not adhere to both the intent and the wording of the act,” he continued.
A Faction of Rightwing Figures Swing Behind the Release
But, some conservative pundits and Trump loyalists swung firmly in support of the Justice Department's actions.
The disclosed materials—originating from a DOJ run by key Trump ally Pam Bondi—includes scores of documents that are completely redacted, and numerous of the individuals depicted in pictures have their faces blacked out.
Yet some do not, including high-profile individuals like Bill Clinton, entertainer Michael Jackson, and academic Noam Chomsky. The inclusion of the former president, in particular, enabled certain conservative figures to launch the attack.
“This is quite ironic how the Democrats falsely claimed President Trump of associating with a sex offender, only for the Trump DOJ to release Epstein files that show Bill Clinton swimming nude with a convicted sex offender,” stated right-wing commentator Laura Loomer.
“New Epstein Files show Bill Clinton shirtless in a jacuzzi with a woman that is other than his spouse Hillary Clinton,” posted lawyer Rogan O’Handley. “There is only one explanation Epstein would take pictures of a Commander-in-Chief with a girl in a hot tub: Leverage.”
Former President Campaign Releases Response
Clinton has repeatedly stated he knew of zero criminal activity by Epstein and has never been accused to have engaged in any wrongdoing. “The White House has not been hiding those files for an extended period only to release them at the last minute on a weekend to protect Bill Clinton,” his spokesperson Angel Ureña said in a statement.
“This is about protecting officials from what comes next, or from what they will try and conceal permanently. Therefore they can release as many low-quality decades-old photos as they desire, but this isn’t about Bill Clinton. Not previously, not ever be,” the response added.
Broader Conservative Comment Seems Subdued
However, overall discourse on the right was relatively muted after the release, especially when compared with the vociferous calls for action that preceded the congressional approval to enact a bill mandating the files' publication.
Loomer, who recently accepted press credentials at the Pentagon, had been one of the most vocal proponents for a full disclosure. Earlier this year, she chastised the administration broadly and Bondi specifically after a set of conservative personalities were provided hard-copy folders of files that included little new data.
