England to Begin the European Championship 2028 Quest at City’s Home Ground
The England national team will embark on their UEFA Euro 2028 campaign at the Manchester City’s stadium, provided that they secure the expected qualification for a competition hosted across most of the United Kingdom and the Republic of Ireland.
Manchester City’s home ground has not hosted an England men’s fixture since the spring of 2016, when Turkey were overcome 2-1 in a warm-up game, but is expected to stage the Three Lions for their first match on Saturday 10 June 2028.
The English side are scheduled to play their last two group stage games at Wembley, but, if they top their group, their round of 16 match would take place at Newcastle’s St James’ Park. Securing the runner-up spot would mean commencing the knockouts at the Hill Dickinson Stadium.
Tournament Opening and Protest
The event was inaugurated at an event in a London landmark on Wednesday night. Key representatives from Uefa and the host FAs were confronted as they arrived the location by around fifty pro-Palestine demonstrators, who demanded Israel’s national side to be expelled from the sport because of the Gaza crisis.
Signs were displayed with slogans stating “Show Israel the red card” and “You are complicit”, while protesters called out: “Kick Israel out.”
Tournament Schedule
The inaugural fixture of Euro 2028 will be held at the the national stadium of Wales in the Welsh capital, on a Friday in June 2028, a match that will involve the Welsh team if they make it.
Wembley will host the two semi-final matches and the final, which will be played on a Sunday in July 2028 with a commencement at 5:00 PM.
It is expected that an afternoon start, which will also be used for European club finals from the upcoming season, will attract families and help engage a more diverse set of fans.
Qualifying Teams
The Ireland are scheduled to play their opening match at the Aviva Stadium and the Tartan Army would do the same at Glasgow’s Hampden Park.
The national sides of all four hosts will enter the preliminary stage; two automatic spots will be set aside for any that miss out on the finals through the standard process.
Locations and Knockout Stage
The Birmingham venue and The North London arena complete the nine host stadiums. Every stadium will hold at least one knockout match, with the last eight staged at each country’s national stadium.
The qualifying draw will be staged in the Northern Irish capital, which was removed as a tournament location last year when it became clear the Belfast stadium could not be upgraded in time, on 6 December 2026.
Leadership Comment
“The event will be a competition for the followers and a celebration of everything we cherish about the game – its fervor and power to foster unity.”
More than three million passes, a record for a men’s European Championship, are expected to be made available to fans.
