The co-founders behind the well-known ice cream brand Ben & Jerry's has announced how parent company the multinational conglomerate prevented the introduction for an innovative pro-Palestinian frozen dessert product.

Ben Cohen, who established the company alongside his partner, announced how he plans to personally create the controversial flavor as part of a personal series showcasing causes Ben & Jerry's has been barred from speaking out about.

Longstanding Conflict Between Founders and Corporate Owner

This latest announcement intensifies the ongoing conflict among the world-famous dessert company with Unilever, the UK-based packaged goods giant which acquired the ice cream brand for over two decades.

The co-founders have claimed that the parent company along with its ice cream arm Magnum improperly prevented their company against "honouring its social mission".

The Fruit Flavor as a Symbol of Solidarity

Mr. Cohen announced via an Instagram video that he is creating an innovative watermelon-flavored sorbet, requesting public suggestions for naming options and potential ingredients.

“I'm doing what they were prevented from doing,” Mr. Cohen commented in his kitchen. “I'm making a watermelon-flavored frozen dessert that calls for permanent peace for Palestinians and calls for addressing the harm that occurred in the region.”

This particular fruit has emerged as a symbol of support for the Palestinian people due to its colors, which mirror the colors in Palestine's national banner – red, green, black and white.

Previous Social Engagement plus Current Changes

In 2021, Ben & Jerry's ceased sales of its products in areas under Israeli control, leading to the parent company selling their Israel business over to a local licensee, thereby permitting ongoing distribution in disputed territories.

This upcoming dessert series will be created through Mr. Cohen's personal brand, the socially conscious dessert company which originally created in 2016 to support ex- political contender Senator Sanders via the flavor "Bernie's Return".

Leadership Changes and Future Plans

The founder stated that he plans to develop additional frozen dessert varieties focusing on issues that Ben & Jerry's was silenced from addressing publicly due to Unilever.

The announcement comes after partner Mr. Greenfield resigned from the company recently, after many years with the organization, mentioning concerns regarding how the company's autonomy had been undermined after Unilever's decision to curb their advocacy work.

At that time, Ben Cohen stated that "Jerry has a really big heart and the ongoing dispute with our parent company was breaking it."

"My heart leads me to continue to work inside the company to fight for its independence so that the company can achieve the social mission, the principles that it was founded on and has maintained for over 40 years," he explained to media outlets.
