A Standout Twelve Months for Striking The Sphere
I never truly grasped until I watched it with my old man. It happened while I was staying to my childhood home in the middle of the global tournament frenzy. Italy was competing, and that carried immense weight to my dad, an expatriate from the Abruzzo region. Even though I perpetually considered the sport dull, his excitement was so contagious that it held my attention to the screen. The puzzle pieces clicked that day, immediately perceiving all the thrilling complexities the pastime had to offer and buying into its profound significance. I felt it was vital that Italy emerge victorious.
It's hard to describe the allure of sports to those who don't get them. One requires to witness that perfect moment where it all makes sense for yourself — or, as a minimum, you need an enthusiastic teacher on hand to demystify the confusing rules and expose the beating heart of the activity. As 2025 demonstrated that this is something a digital title can achieve. The last twelve months gave us three exceptional football games that dissected the sport in radically separate, accessible ways.
The Cultural Touchstone: Despelote
The most significant piece of that trio is Despelote. This indie game is a coming-of-age story set in South America. On the surface, it's a common tale about a young boy finding his way in the 2000s and forging his place. Yet, all of this unfolds against the canvas of an all-consuming historic moment: Ecuador has qualified for the World Cup, and it is the single most important thing happening in the everyone's lives. Football games are on every storefront window. They're broadcast during ceremonies. It's the sole topic anyone can think about. Ball is life.
In this environment, we follow the young hero evolve. He's not just learning where he fits in at a house party, but where he fits into his neighborhood as well. Soccer is inseparable from his being, and it's through the game that he uncovers himself as a devoted citizen. It's the closest a digital experience has ever come to giving me insight into my own father and why he was so glued to the tournament all those years ago.
The Physical Artistry: Rematch
Where Despelote concentrates on the societal importance of soccer, two other games from this year encapsulate the intricacies of the sport itself in more digestible ways than FIFA-style simulators. Rematch, the latest game from the creators behind Sifu, delves into the bodily control of soccer. This multiplayer game breaks down the game by turning it into a fast-paced battle played between small teams. It draws cues from titles like Rocket League to create an arcade-style battle that's focused on tight teamwork and masterful touch.
I became obsessed with Rematch for a period this year. It seemed simple during my early days, but each occasion I picked it up, I found more depth. Beyond basic kicking and passing, I mastered how to feint around defenders to avoid a takeover. I perfected how to drop the ball to prevent someone from taking possession. I worked on my rainbow flicks until I could transform a flashy-looking move into a legitimate evasive action. These myriad subtle techniques helped me understand soccer in ways I wouldn't have been able to appreciate as a passive observer. I walked away with a greater understanding for the vital importance athletic prowess plays in the sport, acknowledging what a physically demanding endeavor it truly is.
The Strategic Mind: Pup Champs
Whereas Rematch illuminated the athletic aspect of soccer, Pup Champs whimsically illustrated the strategic side. The latest game from the team behind Golf Peaks, Pup Champs is a card-based soccer puzzle game starring puppies. Each puzzle requires you to maneuver a handful of dogs on a grid and shoot the ball into a goal. Sounds easy, but the challenge stems from the fact that each player has a specific movement style, they can only travel a set number of spaces, and there are hazards to contend with. Beating a stage demands smart planning and a tight control of the pitch. The sensation is like you're directing a youth soccer team, crafting the ideal strategies to steer your team to victory. While not a simulation adaptation of the sports by any means, but it's a wonderful companion piece to Rematch.
A New Perspective
Of course, there were also additional titles about soccer, as expected. Major series arrived as per usual and popular strategy titles made their much-hyped debut. Yet, thanks to these three games, I spent 2025 thinking about soccer more than I have since that time. Games allowed me to see the physical artistry that goes into a pursuit I'll probably never be skilled at (too much running!) and understand why soccer matters to countless people. It's a notable trend in interactive entertainment I would love to see persist, with more innovative interpretations to athletic titles that aim to express the feel of a game rather than simulating it exactly. And, a couple of games accomplished this for other athletic pursuits this year, whether it was the exhilarating cycling adventures of Wheel World or the artistic experience of Skate Story. If you aren't a fan of sports, there are a growing number of games out there that are eager to invite you into the club.
